The central gateposts consisting of part stone and part brick are in
relatively good order and appear capable of supporting wrought iron gates
that would have been originally installed. This has been further evidenced
by detailed surveys carried out by the Councils Property Services
Department.
At present the
main fence that is currently chain linked is in very poor condition and will
need to be totally removed and wrought iron / cast iron railing put up in
its place to bring the boundary back to its former glory. At present it is
not known the exact design of the railings and extensive searches at the
archives and records office have offered little evidence of how they
would of looked. through the projects co-ordinator adverts have been placed
in the ryde beacon asking if any of the local community could remember what
they had looked like or if any one had pictures that may shed some light on
the matter.
At present the
project board setup to oversee the project are still unsure which is the
best direction to go in commissioning the new railings as it is important to
ensure that whichever route they go they do not end up with something that
is totally out of keeping to the cemetery.
Over the coming
weeks we will endeavour to keep you up to date with developments surrounding
the gates and if anybody reading this can shed any further light on their
design then please contact us using the link provided within this
