Inside Ryde Cemetery Mortuary

The old mortuary will be over the coming months fully restored on its outside seeing the demolition of an old toilet block and the removal of all overgrown ivy.

The inside of the mortuary will be converted to support office space allowing   businesses  that are sympathetic to the nature of the building and the cemetery to work from within it.

At present the councils Buildings conservation team have put forward ideas that would hopefully meet both the requirements of complying to current building regulations concerning habited premises, whilst at the same time take into consideration the traditional building techniques that would have been employed on the building when it was originally built. It has been important to show that the council have taken this very important factor into consideration as it is a requirement of the HLF funding that we apply for listed buildings status  once the project is near completion.

As mentioned earlier specifications have been drawn up to take into consideration the above for mentioned requirements the final decision will be made by the councils planning office.

The council will also need the approval from the Portsmouth Diocese as the mortuary lies on consecrated ground and a faculty we be required from them before any works start on the building.
